What’s in a Named Instance?


I stopped to chat with a colleague I see once in a while in the office—we’ll call him Aaron. As we were talking, I glanced at his monitor and saw the familiar blue banner of a Remote Desktop session. He was logged into a server ending in .local with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) open.

“Is that a named instance?” I asked.

Aaron looked at me, genuinely puzzled. “What’s a named instance?”

I realized then that despite years of building, maintaining, and architecting data through these, I didn’t have a textbook definition ready. One of the most confounding parts of adulthood to me is how often I am faced with something I feel I probably should know, but find myself unable to come up with a good explanation. I knew the backslash in the connection string and the dynamic port headaches, but I’d stopped questioning their value.

In fact, I’d stopped questioning if they were even the right tool. Usually, I was just happy there was a service that multiple people could access to satisfy the different needs an organization might have for data. I decided to stop being the “silent expert” and actually look at the value and the math.

The Microsoft Gravity Well

Named instances are a uniquely Microsoft phenomenon. If you move to PostgreSQL, MariaDB, or MongoDB, that multi-layered, “one-stop-shop” approach vanishes. In those worlds, you don’t just RDP into a box and fire up a unified GUI like SSMS to manage isolated service instances.

Microsoft locks you into a specific set of admin capabilities that are incredibly seductive. They provide the security layer, the management tools, and the service isolation in one package. But this convenience is exactly how they extract the highest costs from the companies that rely most on large databases with multiple users.

When you leave the Microsoft ecosystem, you aren’t just switching syntax. You are transitioning from being a Database Administrator to being a security architect, a tool manager, and a systems maintainer. With SQL Server, you pay for the privilege of not having to build your own management stack.

The Cost of Convenience (Annual)

Microsoft’s “neat trick” is the 4-core minimum. Even if you only need a sliver of power, you pay for the baseline. I won’t even tell you what a perpetual license costs—it’s enough to make a CFO faint. Instead, let’s look at the annual “rent” for the software and the metal in 2026.

When you scale to a 16-core VM in Azure, the “License Included” model becomes a massive overhead. For a standard production instance running 24/7:

Is it worth it?

You don’t have to take my word for it. People spend a lot of money on SQL both in Azure and on-prem; they even spend a lot of money on MSSQL on AWS and Google Cloud. That should tell you everything you need to know.

But there are alternatives. This is one of the reasons that Databricks and Snowflake are considered so valuable. There are still not a lot of great alternatives to what Microsoft put forth almost 30 years ago.

If you are on bare metal and need to squeeze every drop of value out of a license by running isolated AI and transactional workloads via named instances—perhaps. But you have to acknowledge what you’re buying: you’re paying Microsoft tens of thousands of dollars so you don’t have to spend your weekends configuring pgAdmin, managing custom security roles, or troubleshooting open-source tool compatibility.

You may be wisely asking yourself, “Has he really defined it yet? I still have questions.” Well, you are correct. The definition is a little tricky, but here is my best effort with some paraphrasing of a great answer:

“All right, people, let’s start at the beginning one last time.”

A Named Instance is a complete, isolated copy of the SQL engine running side-by-side with the original on a single OS. It satisfies the needs of users with different technical skills and access requirements by giving them their own private version of the truth. Isolation is the primary concern; if a Dev instance crashes, the HR instance on the same hardware doesn’t even feel the glitch. While the Default Instance lives on the standard port, every Named Instance hides behind a Dynamic Port managed by the SQL Browser Service. It’s the same software, but with its own service accounts, security settings, and memory footprint. It’s how one expensive server handles a hundred different realities without them ever bumping into each other in the hallway.

If you take away anything from this, I hope it is that sometimes you learn by asking questions, even if they make you feel a little silly.
